Premium shows without cable
Leading the OTT movement, HBO was looking to offer a stand-alone service with a completely refreshed design. Four platforms were shipped in less than four months - just in time for the record-setting Game of Thrones Season 5 premiere.
Updated features out of the gate
Continue watching, add to watchlist, parental controls, and custom closed captions were all built from the ground-up for launch. Creating and vetting external designs, communicating to a large development team, our role for cross-team collaboration was the key to our successful launch.
Onboarding. Creating a simplified UX
Users who have an HBO subscription from their cable provider have access to HBO GO. With the introduction of HBO Now, users who are cord cutters can now purchase HBO without the cable contract. This introduced two separate applications, which both should act and contain the same content.
Creating an easy to use onboarding experience that clearly explains purchase, restoration, and account linking was one of the larger problems we had to tackle. Users can purchase on desktop, or through iTunes on mobile or connected. With two payment options linking accounts was crucial to a stress-free onboarding experience.
